Cockapoo Gifts: Why No Two Cockapoos Look Alike

Cockapoo Gifts: Why No Two Cockapoos Look Alike

Prices and lead times checked October 2026.

Short answer

The best cockapoo gift is one that looks like their actual cockapoo. Because cockapoos are a crossbreed with no breed standard, there is no single cockapoo look, so a generic breed design will be wrong for most owners. A portrait designed from their own dog's photo is the only version that gets the coat, the colour and the face right. Our sweatshirt is £70, and the lead time is 2 to 3 weeks.

Buying for a cockapoo owner is quietly harder than buying for someone with a pedigree dog, and the reason is not the owner. It is the breed, or rather the lack of one. There is no official cockapoo blueprint, which means every "cockapoo" mug, card and print you find online is really a picture of one particular cockapoo, and the odds of it being theirs are slim. This guide covers what actually works as a gift, what to avoid, and the one thing cockapoo owners notice immediately that owners of other breeds often do not.

Key takeaways

  • Cockapoos are a crossbreed, so the Royal Kennel Club does not register them and no popularity figure exists.
  • No breed standard means no single cockapoo look. Two cockapoos can look almost nothing alike.
  • Coat type is the big one: tight curls and loose waves read completely differently in thread.
  • Send a photo where the eyes are visible, because coat often hides a cockapoo's face.
  • Decide whether you want the groomed version or the shaggy version, then send that photo.
  • Sweatshirt £70, college sweatshirt £75, cushion £55. Lead time 2 to 3 weeks.
  • Unlimited revisions before anything is stitched, so the coat can be adjusted until it is right.
  • Want a figurine or something under £25? We are not the right shop. Links below.

Why is a cockapoo harder to buy for than a pedigree dog?

Start with a fact about the data, because it explains everything that follows. The Royal Kennel Club registers pedigree dogs, breed by breed, and publishes the totals each year. Crossbreeds are not registered with it at all. So while you can look up exactly how many Labradors were registered last year, there is no equivalent authoritative figure for cockapoos, however many of them are walking around your local park. We are not going to invent one, and you should be sceptical of any page that gives you a confident number.

For a sense of what those pedigree figures look like, The Scotsman reported on 19 March 2026 that the Royal Kennel Club's most registered breeds in 2025 were the Labrador Retriever with 29,919, the Cocker Spaniel with 21,618 and the Golden Retriever with 9,976. Two things are worth noting about that list. The first is that those are new registrations within a single year, not a count of dogs alive, so they describe puppies joining the register rather than the dog population. The second is the one that matters here: cockapoos sit entirely outside this table. They are not low down it. They are not on it, because it is a register of pedigree breeds and a cockapoo is not one. We have separate guides for each of those three, in case the dog you are buying for turns out to be one of them: labrador gifts, cocker spaniel gifts and golden retriever gifts.

The practical consequence for a gift is bigger than it sounds. Pedigree breeds have a written breed standard, a description of what the breed should look like, which is why a generic cocker spaniel illustration is recognisably a cocker spaniel to almost every cocker spaniel owner. Cockapoos have no such standard, so there is nothing for a generic design to be faithful to. The cockapoo on the card is simply somebody's cockapoo.

Why does a generic cockapoo design usually look wrong?

The honest version

Because there is no breed standard, cockapoo coats range from tight curls to loose waves to very nearly straight, and colours run across apricot, cream, red, black, chocolate, merle and various parti colours and roans. A generic design has to pick one of those and commit. If their dog is a straight-coated black cockapoo and the design is a curly apricot one, the owner sees a different dog, and politely says nothing.

You can hear this in how cockapoo owners talk about their dogs. They rarely say "she's a cockapoo" and stop. They say she is a straighter-coated one, or a very curly one, or that she went chocolate and then faded to café au lait, or that she looks nothing like her litter brother. That level of detail is not fussiness. It is what you get when the only accurate description of a dog is the dog itself.

Breeders describe crossing generations with shorthand, and it is worth knowing only because it feeds the same point. A first cross, written F1, is a cocker spaniel crossed with a poodle. An F1b is a cockapoo crossed back to one of the parent breeds, usually a poodle. An F2 is two cockapoos crossed together. Broadly, more poodle in the mix tends toward a curlier coat, but the generation label is not a reliable prediction of what any individual puppy's coat will do, and littermates from the same pairing often differ visibly. So even the labels do not give you a look you can design from. Only the dog does.

This is the whole case for a portrait designed from a photo, and it is a stronger case for cockapoos than for almost any other dog. We are not asking you to prefer bespoke on principle. We are pointing out that for this particular dog, generic cannot work, because there is no generic cockapoo to be generic about.

Which cockapoo gifts actually work?

Everything below is embroidered rather than printed, made to order in our Cambridge studio, and designed from a photo of their dog. Prices are the starting prices as of October 2026.

Gift From Who it suits
Embroidered pet portrait sweatshirt £70 The safest first order. Long sleeved, so the free sleeve embroidery applies.
College sweatshirt £75 Someone who wants the dog's name in large collegiate lettering as well.
Hoodie £80 Dog walkers. The one that gets worn in the rain rather than kept for best.
Christmas jumper £75 December gifting, if you order with the 2 to 3 week lead time in hand.
T-shirt £55 Warmer climates, or someone who already owns a sweatshirt of theirs.
Velvet cushion £55 A gift that stays in the house. Has a pom pom trim, which divides people.
Cotton linen cushion £55 The plainer cushion, no trim, natural tones. Same job, quieter.
Canvas apron £60 The cockapoo who supervises the kitchen, which is most of them.
Canvas tote bag £50 The lowest priced bag, and it goes everywhere she does.
Kids' sweatshirt £60 Children who grew up with the dog. Sizes start from 6 months.

If you want a broader sweep of ideas, including options that are not from us at all, our general guides cover more ground than this page does: thoughtful gifts for pet lovers and dog mom gifts. This page sticks to what is specific about cockapoos, which is mostly the coat. If the dog turns out to be a pedigree spaniel after all, the springer spaniel gifts guide covers the other spaniel people mix up with a cocker, and our pet gifts by breed hub lists every breed guide we have.

What photo should you send of a cockapoo?

The photo brief

Pick a photo where you can clearly see the eyes and where the coat is doing what it normally does. Cockapoo faces are often buried in coat, so a shot taken straight on, in daylight, with the fringe not covering the eyes, is worth more than a beautifully composed photo of a dog you cannot quite find. Taken at head height beats taken from standing.

We have a full guide to choosing the best photo for an embroidered pet portrait, and it covers the general rules on lighting, angle and dark coats properly. What follows is only the cockapoo part, because this breed has two problems most dogs do not.

The first is the eyes. On a smooth-coated dog, the eyes are simply there. On a cockapoo, the coat above the eyes can grow long enough to hide them completely, and a portrait where the eyes are guessed at rather than seen loses the dog entirely. If the only photo you love has the fringe down, send it anyway and tell us, and send a second one where the eyes are visible so we have something to work from.

The second is the coat itself, and this is the one that catches people out. A tight curly coat and a loose wavy coat are completely different things to stitch, and we cannot infer which one a dog has from a blurry or backlit photo. We need to be able to see the texture. A photo in daylight, where you can make out individual curls or waves rather than a soft brown shape, is the single most useful thing you can send us for a cockapoo.

Cockapoo photo checklist

  • Eyes clearly visible, fringe not covering them
  • Daylight, so the coat texture is readable as curls or waves
  • Taken at the dog's head height, not looking down from standing
  • The coat in its usual state, not just after a bath or just before a groom
  • One photo is enough, but a second from a different angle helps
  • Old and imperfect photos are welcome. Tell us if it is the only one you have

Every photo that comes in is reviewed by a person before anyone starts designing. About 70 per cent are approved with no edits at all, and roughly 1 in 25 need a retake, where we come back and ask for a different picture. If yours is one of those, it is not a criticism of your photography. It usually means we genuinely cannot tell what the coat is doing.

Should you choose the groomed cockapoo or the shaggy one?

Before or after the groomer

Decide this before you send the photo, because it changes the portrait completely. A cockapoo in a teddy bear trim and the same dog in a shorter working trim can read as two different animals, and three weeks of regrowth changes the silhouette again. There is no wrong answer. There is only the version the owner thinks of as their dog, so pick that one deliberately rather than by accident.

This is a question we end up asking a lot, and it only exists because of the no-standard point above. A pedigree breed with a defined coat looks broadly the same month to month. A cockapoo has a grooming style, chosen by its owner, and the style is as much a part of how the dog looks as the coat it grew. Round, full teddy bear faces produce a very different portrait from a shorter trim where the muzzle and eyes are clear.

If you are buying this as a surprise and you are not sure which version they would pick, the shaggier everyday one is usually the safer bet. It is how the dog looks for most of the year, and it is how they picture her when she is not in the room. If you are buying it for yourself, use whichever version makes you feel something when you look at the photo. That is a more reliable test than anything we could tell you.

Either way, nothing is final at that point. There are unlimited revisions before anything is stitched, so if the first design comes back and the coat reads too curly, or the trim looks shorter than you meant, you say so and we change it. The machine does not start until you are happy.

How long does it take, and when should you order?

The lead time is 2 to 3 weeks depending on how busy the studio is, and the current figure is always shown at checkout rather than guessed at here. Everything is made to order, so there is no shelf to pull a cockapoo sweatshirt off.

  • Day 0, you orderYou upload the photo at checkout and tell us anything we should know, including which grooming stage you want and whether the fringe in the photo is hiding the eyes.
  • Within a day or two, we review the photoA person looks at it before any design work starts. About 70 per cent are approved with no edits. Roughly 1 in 25 come back to you for a retake.
  • Then, the designThe portrait is designed from your photo and sent to you to approve. Unlimited revisions, so coat texture and trim can be adjusted until it looks like her.
  • 2 to 3 weeks from order, it is stitched and shippedMade in Cambridge on one of our 29 embroidery machines and shipped worldwide. Free UK delivery over £75, or £3.99 Royal Mail 48 Tracked below that.

For Christmas, the maths is simple enough to do on your fingers. Take the date you want it in their hands, count back 3 weeks, and order before that. A long-sleeved piece ordered in good time also gets free sleeve embroidery, which is an icon such as a paw print or a heart plus a name, and for a cockapoo the name on the sleeve is often the detail people love most.

When is Lucy & Lola not the right answer?

Often enough that it is worth saying plainly, so you do not waste an evening on us.

If you want something under £25, we are the wrong shop. Our lowest priced embroidered piece is the £25 iron-on patch, with the £50 canvas tote bag the cheapest bag after it, and nothing custom and embroidered comes in below the patch. Our stocking fillers collection runs from about £2 to £20, but those are cards, mugs and small extras rather than portraits of their dog, and you should buy them knowing that. For a genuinely cheap gift that still has their cockapoo in it, a printed photo in a nice frame beats anything we sell at that price.

If you want a figurine, a sculpture or a 3D model of their cockapoo, we cannot help at all. We do not make them and we have no plans to. Search for a pet sculptor or a clay artist who works from photos. Similarly, if you want a painting, a pencil portrait or a digital illustration, those are different crafts with their own specialists, and you want one of them rather than us.

If you need it this week, we are not the answer either. The lead time is 2 to 3 weeks and we will not pretend otherwise to take the order. Buy something immediate now and give this later, or give a card saying their portrait is being made. And if you want a plain cockapoo design rather than their specific dog, a print shop or an illustrator with a cockapoo range will serve you better and cost less. That option is just not what this page is about, for the reason set out at the top.

If you do want the version that actually looks like their cockapoo, coat and all, start with the sweatshirt. Over 75,000 pet parents have ordered from us, and we hold a 4.9 average from more than 10,000 five star reviews.

Design their cockapoo portrait

We were founded in 2021 by Lucy and Andy with one embroidery machine and a rescue dachshund called Lola. There are 29 machines now, and everything we make is embroidered rather than printed, apart from a small range of large-scale print graphic sweatshirts. We stitch dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, hamsters, birds and reptiles, and multi-pet designs are available if the cockapoo has a sibling.

Frequently asked questions

How popular are cockapoos in the UK?

There is no authoritative figure, and that is a fact about the data rather than an evasion. The Royal Kennel Club registers pedigree breeds and publishes those totals, but crossbreeds are not registered with it, so cockapoos do not appear in the official numbers at all. Any page quoting you a precise cockapoo population or ranking has estimated it from somewhere else. We would rather tell you the number does not exist than make one up.

Why does a generic cockapoo design not look like my dog?

Because cockapoos have no breed standard, so there is no agreed cockapoo appearance for a generic design to copy. Coat ranges from tight curls through loose waves to nearly straight, colours vary widely, and grooming styles change the silhouette again. Whoever drew the generic design had to choose one combination, and unless your dog happens to match it, you are looking at somebody else's cockapoo. A portrait designed from your own photo is the only way around that.

What is a good gift for a cockapoo mom?

Something with her actual dog on it rather than a cockapoo in general, for all the reasons on this page. The embroidered sweatshirt at £70 is the most popular starting point, and because it is long sleeved it includes free sleeve embroidery, usually the dog's name. If she already has one, the £55 cushion keeps the portrait in the house instead of the wardrobe. Our dog mom gifts guide covers wider options.

Can you capture a curly cockapoo coat in embroidery?

Yes, and the texture is the part we pay most attention to on this breed. A tight curly coat and a loose wavy coat are stitched quite differently, so what we need from you is a photo clear enough to show which one your dog has. Daylight, in focus, close enough that individual curls or waves are visible. If the design comes back and the curl reads too tight or too loose, say so, because revisions are unlimited before anything is stitched.

My cockapoo's fringe covers her eyes. Will that be a problem?

It can be, which is why we flag it for this breed specifically. The eyes do more work than anything else in making a portrait look like the right dog, so if they are hidden in the photo we are partly guessing. Send the photo you love plus one where the eyes are visible, and tell us which one is the dog you picture. Every photo is reviewed by a person before designing, so if we need a different one we will ask.

Should I send a photo from before or after grooming?

Whichever version you think of as your dog, but decide deliberately, because the two can look like different animals. A teddy bear trim gives a round, full face. A shorter trim shows the muzzle and the eyes. Three weeks of regrowth changes the shape again. If it is a surprise gift and you are unsure, the everyday shaggier version is usually the safer choice, because it is how the dog looks for most of the year.

How long does a cockapoo portrait take to make?

2 to 3 weeks depending on studio capacity, with the current lead time shown at checkout. Everything is made to order in Cambridge and shipped worldwide. That timeline includes the photo review, the design and your approval, so if you are buying for a specific date, count back 3 weeks from it and order before then. If you need something sooner than that, we are honestly not the right choice and we would rather say so now.

What does it cost, and is there anything cheaper?

Portrait pieces start at £25 for the iron-on patch, then £50 for the canvas tote bag, with the sweatshirt at £70, the college sweatshirt and Christmas jumper at £75, and the cushions at £55. UK delivery is free over £75, or £3.99 Royal Mail 48 Tracked below that. Nothing custom and embroidered comes in under £25, so if your budget is tighter than that, look at our stocking fillers or a well chosen printed photo in a frame instead.

Do you make cockapoo figurines or paintings?

No. We only make embroidered portraits, apart from a small range of large-scale print graphic sweatshirts. If you want a sculpture or figurine of their cockapoo, look for a pet sculptor who works from photographs. If you want a painted or pencil portrait, that is a different craft again and there are artists who specialise in it. Those are better searches than trying to make us fit.

Can you stitch two cockapoos on the same item?

Yes, multi-pet designs are available, and with two cockapoos the no-breed-standard point works in your favour. Litter siblings often differ visibly in coat and colour, so a design with both of them is immediately recognisable as your two dogs rather than a pair of generic curly dogs. Send a clear photo of each one rather than a single photo of them together, since one is usually half hidden behind the other.
